Subject: What do men really want? A response to Maureen Dowd’s column and book.

Transcript from the Caplis and Silverman talk show on Denver’s KHOW 630 AM on Friday November 18, 2005

Dan Caplis: Steven, how you doing my friend?

Craig Silverman: Yo, Steve.

Steve: I’m on here, great … my main point was … men just want women who will respect them, and I think what Maureen Dowd might miss is that men may not mind women who are smart and successful. What else puts men off is … a condescending, demeaning attitude - sometimes that comes across.

Caplis: But where do you think that comes from? Because that stereotype is out there of … the woman that’s just so harsh and demeaning and doesn’t respect the guy, but where do you think that comes from?

Steve: Well … I own a men’s issues group online and … the general consensus is that a lot of that’s coming from society, and may have trickled down from feminism that may have started out as something benign but if you look the way men are portrayed in the media, or in commercials, it’s sometimes downright demeaning, and … maybe that’s filtering into the collective … subconscious of a lot of them.

Caplis: I don’t buy that, big fellow. I think blaming everything on feminism - that’s just a cop out. I think what happens is a lot of this comes back to us. I think from kindergarten on women are separated out by who are the pretty ones and who aren’t and they’re not treated as well if they’re not as pretty and there’s a resentment that develops that I think’s perfectly understandable.

Steve: There is … that. I mean … it works both ways.

Silverman: Yeah, but when you look at feminism part of their agenda was that the man is keeping you down and we can’t help it, we’re men, and maybe there’s a little bit of a bias for Maureen Dowd and others saying you’re one of that group of people who’ve oppressed women for years. I mean think about it, women didn’t have a right to vote for a long time, who created that? It was men.

Caplis: Yeah, but nobody walking around now remembers that.

Steve: No … and it’s something that the people in my group wouldn’t want.

Caplis: But they remember not being treated as well because they weren’t as pretty as the girl at the desk next to them, or on Valentine’s Day the other kid has a pile twice as high. Let’s face it, I mean, we as men, and I’m not trying to do this Alan Alda thing, but we as men have historically been very superficial when it comes to women. And the pretty girls get separated out right away, and they’re the desirable ones, and you can’t blame people for having that resentment.

Silverman: Well, yeah … it’s a complicated subject. Men, women, and we’re interested in what you have to say. Thanks a lot for calling, Steve

I agree with you, mens_issues. I never thought of myself as being a men's rights movement type, but a lot of what you said made sense.

I too caught some blog chatter about their coverage of the Ward Churchill thing...

They look so formal in those suits. Do they do the show in suits? Most radio personalities dress down... Hannity does the sport jacket look a lot. Steve held his own there...

I think all the article hub-bub about Dowd is encouraged by her publicist. Doesn't she have a book to promote or something?

Welcome mens_issues! Do you keep up with Caplis and Silverman in general, or just when they discuss something remotely related to men's rights? You got a decent call through, congrats.
