Good to hear that seems to be working out... Howard said something about Yahoo providing some coverage... I guess they'll be covering the street scene... _________________ "We grow too soon old and too late smart..." quoted by Michael Savage... God Bless America CAN be a sincere prayer... | A buddy of mine said Stern had announced "strippers on the street." How much of that 'street action' will Yahoo be allowed to cover?? Will Yahoo follow Stern and/or staff to Sirius? Weather will determine a lot... |

Yahoo! is just the latest to jump into the "hype." It does demonstrate how much the internet has changed what is "news" though... _________________ Hold your horses, don't click mine... |

Women will be trying to keep their husbands and sons off the net on Friday.... Howard 100 News did a "focus group" of "mainstream women" one day last week... One pointed out that (to her) Stern seemed to be a "set-back to efforts she and others had made to civilize men" (badly paraphrased)... _________________ Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, pending pilfering prosecution... |

Just saw Mark's summary of today's show... Looks like a lot whining today and repetition of the previous 2 days... He did plug the Yahoo Stern page and say that more than likely things would go as scheduled... After all, New Year's eve goes on outdoors regardless of the weather... Today's highlights:
*Steve The Engineer (Wood Yee) Says Goodbye. 12/14/05. 6:35am
*Les Moonves And Joel Hollander Say Goodbye To Howard. 12/14/05. 6:50am - The text summary made Les and Joel sound downright amicable...
*KC Armstrong Visits. 12/14/05. 8:10am
*Bill Kinison Calls In. 12/14/05. 9:40am
*Savanna Samson Visits. 12/14/05. 9:45am |

Yahoo audio coverage was/is ok... I wasn't doing too well with their video (dial-up)... At one point at SFN, it was reported that 790+ people were watching/listening via Yahoo. There were also bar parties with "direct feeds" across the country. There is a gallery of pictures from Howard's rally...

There are also several threads of pictures at SternFanNetwork - General Chatter Forum...
There's an "after party" being prepared at NYC's Hard Rock Cafe... |

Newsday's article covered part of the 'rally.' So many people coming out for that junk, even in the drizzling rain, but what else is new...
| Quote: | Howard Stern and free speech? Not after today
By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer
December 16, 2005, 8:45 AM EST
NEW YORK -- The free ride for Howard Stern fans ends Friday.
Stern, a New York radio fixture for 20 years and host of a syndicated show for 12 million daily listeners, bid farewell to his fans with a final show on terrestrial radio. On Jan. 9, Stern makes his move to satellite radio _ where his once-free speech will cost listeners $12.95 a month.
"Good morning, and welcome to the last show on terrestrial radio," Stern said to launch his grand finale. The sound of "Taps" played in the background.
The show opened with a Stern-centric remake of the classic "What A Wonderful World," and John Lennon's "Imagine."
As the show went on, several thousand people stood in a steady drizzle along 56th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues; many waved signs praising Stern and attacking the Federal Communications Commission. Among those onstage there were Stern regulars "Jeff the Drunk" and "Beetlejuice," who led a singalong.
"I'm a dedicated listener. I wanted to see this happen," said Chris Casavant, who drove up at 4:30 a.m. from Farmington, N.J.
Asked why she was there, Donna Casavant made a face and pointed at her husband.
Stern later planned a two-hour midtown Manhattan party to say goodbye to any loyal listeners who turned up _ and scores already had, despite a driving rainstorm. Stern planned to deliver an address to his radio fans, finishing up a quarter-century on terrestrial radio as arguably its most influential figure.
Stern leaves behind a plethora of imitators spawned in the wake of his radio success, when his show enjoyed an unprecedented ratings run to hit No. 1 in New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Los Angeles.
His move to Sirius Satellite Radio, while somewhat risky, comes with a huge financial reward: Stern signed a five-year, $500 million contract to jump. He's creating two new channels for Sirius, with the salaries, overhead and other programming costs coming out of his windfall.
Across his career, Stern evolved into the center of attention in First Amendment issues and censorship. Infinity Broadcasting paid $1.7 million in 1995 to settle FCC complaints against Stern. In April 2004, Clear Channel that dumped Stern from six stations in April 2004 over his show's content.
Sirius is depending on Stern to reverse the company's money-losing ways. Since the 51-year-old shock jock announced his move last year, the number of Sirius subscribers jumped from 600,000 to more than 2.2 million _ and that figure was expected to hit 3 million by the end of this year. |

Michael Heaton, Plain Dealer Columnist (Cleveland)
Today is Howard Stern's last day on terrestrial radio and I have nothing but praise and gratitude. Howard Stern is a brilliant comedian, performance artist and the most innovative, groundbreaking mind in the history of modern broadcasting.
No one on radio in my lifetime has been more popular, more misunderstood and more unfairly scapegoated than Howard Stern. He is the grown-up, real-life embodiment of Holden Caulfield, the fictional protagonist of J.D. Salinger's evergreen coming-of-age novel "The Catcher in the Rye."
The phony adult world - aided by a complicit media - sickened Howard Stern to the bottom of his soul. On the air, he used his microphone like a gun and his sense of humor like an endless belt of bullets to decimate the pervasive world of glib happy-talk that reigned on the airwaves across America.
Striking a blow for intelligent, adult listeners everywhere, Howard Stern set about the work of exploding every sacred cow in sight. He went after the mindlessly accepted conventions of modern society with gleeful zeal. He refused to repeat the boring platitudes employed by the lazy, self-satisfied broadcasters who came before him. They were there merely to maintain the status quo for the sake of their public popularity and oversized paychecks.
Howard Stern became a millionaire by refusing to be bought off. He created the world of Howard Stern's Brain, a labyrinthine multiplex of unfiltered, uncensored and unadulterated audio theater. He spoke the Gospel of the First Thought. So we heard Howard on sex. In fact, Howard on sex a lot. But there was also Howard on marriage, Howard on race, on politics, the economy, the people in his office, what he saw on TV last night or had for breakfast that morning. Plus the personal stuff that polite people rarely share with anyone, much less a nation of laughing listeners.
So we drove to work every morning with Howard by our side. We laughed while Howard riffed on all aspects of American life that bummed us out or made us crazy. He railed against every institution that tied us up, held us down or made us feel powerless. Howard made fun of idiot celebrities and pompous politicians. And yes, there was sex. Always more sex.
Before Howard Stern, the famous thrived on personal exclusivity. You could never hang out with icons like the Rolling Stones, Jack Nicholson or David Letterman. They lived in some other world.
But Howard Stern invited all his fans into his personal life to celebrate his own naked dorkiness. We were invited to embrace his lack of self-esteem, his larger-than-life fears and existential dread. While you wanted to be like celebs because they were cool, you liked Howard because he was so honestly uncool.
Then in 2004, the Janet Jackson Super Bowl halftime show sent the spineless nitwits of the FCC looking for a fall guy. Howard Stern was tailor-made to die for their sins. And to save their own necks they drove him from the rotting corpse of radio. Good riddance to radio. They killed one of the few golden geese left in an ever-shrinking flock.
Come 2006, I see him up there on Sirius Satellite radio like some superhero exploring new galaxies of entertainment. I see Howard pioneering new forms of mirth and laughter. God speed Howard Stern. A grateful nation of your faithful salute you.
Keep telling the truth. Keep making us laugh. See you on the other side.

It's important that Yahoo! know that over-all Stern fans appreciate Yahoo's coverage of Howard's last Viacom/Infinty show. Several threads at SternFanNetwork discussed Yahoo! coverage. SFN is not directly linked here because of possible TOS conflicts. If you haven't checked out Thanks, even though Viacom made you delete it all after Stern's Sirius show started.
| Quote: | SFN Quote #1: "Yahoo might not have been perfect, but it was pretty amazing that we got to see any of the damn thing live. I'd give them a 95 out of 100, well maybe a 90..."
SFN Quote #2: "It was like a bonus that yahoo was even involved.. ..it was some extra footage for those that couldn't be there."
SFN Quote #3: "I liked the Yahoo coverage. I wasn't able to be there. so it was cool to see anything at all. What suprises me is something like that can go on, and news channels haven't picked it up."
SFN Quote #4: "I was listening to all of the guys give their speeches on the radio feed... and watching it also on Yahoo. Yahoo started out not having a delay when Artie was giving his speech. By the time Howard got to address the crowd... the Yahoo feed and the radio feed were about neck and neck.
There were also a lot of breaks in the video feed too!! I guess Yahoo didn't have a clue as to how many fans the Stern show really has!" |
MY take:
What the above said... My former station jettisoned Howard and G. Gordon Liddy Jan 19th or 20th (whichever of those was Inauguration Day). The Yahoo! stuff was the first I'd been able to listen in anything approaching real time on Howard since February... Yahoo! didn't have to do it at all.. The photographs Yahoo did were great. Also, the podcast phone tributes by fans we don't hear all the time were good. The only thing Yahoo! might as well not have done was their "Howard Nation" Forum (which was over-run by O&A trolls).
I've seen a couple of newspaper articles. Cleveland did an excellent op-ed.. I blogged it, http://try2regale.blogspot.com/20...-here-visionary-stern-off-to.html
But, it's worth having to give up your zip and D.O.B. to read it at the online paper site..

Only TV stuff I saw was Access and Extra... They were focused on Martha Stewart welcoming him to Sirius.
