|
|
Advertising Age
| Quote: | | Spots are going for $5,000 to $6,000, with live reads, the term for on-air talent pitching the product, maxing out at $10,000. When Howard Stern's show was broadcast on terrestrial radio stations, he commanded $30,000 for a live read. |
I don't know why there is such a mystery over the number of listeners tuned into Stern. At any given time, one can see exactly how many are tuned in at any given time, thanks to the magic of satellite tracking. _________________

Further 'proof' of the 'vast multi-wing conspiricy' to discredit Howard Stern? (Maybe paranoid-Howie's on to something?).
On the NYRMB they're spinning this story to show HS's no longer a radio-force, but that's an O&A fan-site anyway...
"$30,000 for a live read". Don't think that was routine-billling, rather some special circumstance?
The level of hatred toward him is stunning -- jealous, much? Half a BILLION dollars. Yeah, he's doing sooo poorly... |

| Maybe somebody that actually knows something can clarify the whole thing about ads on Sirius. How much of the whether to ad/not ad/who ads; etc. is up to the individual channels?? It being satellite and all, does Howard have to have ads at all - or are they just an extra - providing a little slush income?? |

I dont think the ad money is directly going to Howard. But selling ad time on Howard 100 and 101 is a very good idea for Sirius.
Ad dollars are ranked by the target audience and their buying power. Howard's audience is basically 18-80 so he can sell anything.
Because of the number of listeners that listen to his 2 channels vs the number of listeners that listen to the other 150 channels the ad money for air time on his channel is higher than that of ad time for other channels.
So companies might be buying flat time on other channels and deal for additional time on Howard.
Howard hit this on the head though when he said that his success isnt driven by the ad dollars, its by subscriber. If Sirius can keep running and getting subscribers to cover the cost of operations the ad money is just icing .
It might even be reasonable to suggest that Sirius will be able to offer advertising at a lower premium than testicle radio and acctually take some of that business from them as well. |

| The show does seem to have less money to give away. I take it that's why they haven't been playing "Stump the Booey" and "Win Fred's Money". Too bad... 2 of my faves. |

They are givin away $5,000 to a convict and $25,000 to a crazy lady currently ... I think that you forget that they have only been on SatRad for 9 months. Give them 1.5 - 2 yrs ... Howie didnt have any where near that amount of givaways in the early years.
It takes time to build brand loyalty and brand confidence. |

Hope this doesn't lead to an increase in the number of commercials. Karmazin said in an interview in April that Sirius would consider upping the number of ads on the show from 6 to 9 minutes per hour.

That would still be low compared to the 20 minutes or so they had on terrestrial, but still... we're paying $12.95 per month, and the show is so great with so few commercials. |

Howard addressed the ad rate story Thursday. He is getting the picture that this is part of a larger anti-satellite campaign - probably orchestrated by the broadcast radio industry. _________________ Viking Cats endless loop |

The show is so incredibly great now without all those ads, not to mention the freedom and everything else. The best!
