So the US has banned Internet gambling, and many of these websites are huge sponsors for Howard's show. How will this affect the show? And, especially since Howard is such a huge part of Sirius, will it affect the whole of Sirius? Explain.

Wow, I'm really uninformed. I don't gamble, so really haven't paid much attention to this. It could get interesting. They are the big prize sponsors for Howards "events" (ie. the Fart Olympics). At the least, he may have to find new sponsors. I'd think Golden Palace would stay. They actually have casinos. Maybe Party Poker has casino interests too. NY is near Atlantic City, there may be other casinos willing to advertise.

I have to say I didnt know that this went into effect, and I dont know all the in's and out's of the law, however I dont think this will have much effect since 90% of the gambling sites that advertise with Sirius are legitimate sports books, the gambling goes on "technically" at a licensed site, ie Vegas, AC...

If anything this might even generate more ad's trying to stop or roll back the laws.

Reuters - Congress approves Internet gambling ban bill
London Free Press - Internet betting takes hit
InternetNews.com - Gambling Sites Folding U.S. Hand
The Age - US bans offshore online gambling

Here are some news links... I'm still confused. Some say "offshore gaming ban," some not. I'm not sure corporations in other nations should profit from exploiting addictive behaviors in other countries.

What I'm not as confused about though, is that Howard and the show always survive. What House said about it just being a "new rant" and a new thing to advertise about makes sense though.

I hope this post doesn't bring all the gambling ad spammers here. I'm hoping someone with more insight on gaming issues will post more about how this might affect advertising though. I'd think that casinos would still want to advertise their casinos. New Yorkers travel a lot. I hadn't thought about businesses advertising to roll-back the law. I tend to tune the ads out, but I don't remember hearing many ads against this law in the past month or so.

In general, those advertisers will have to rethink their strategy. I doubt Howard's show will be greatly affected. Other advertisers will be found to replace any who drop out. Some gaming advertisers may use the ad time to campaign against the laws (surprised more of that didn't happen in advance though). Howard will add this to his list of rants. Casinos and gaming businesses can still advertise the business they do at their properties.

There may be a blessing in people not betting using credit cards.

Nothing phases Howard much in the long-run.

It was voted on Saturday. When does it go into effect? I saw plenty of online gambling ads on the web today...

Newsguy: I'm just catching up with Ferrall's shows from last week, and will get to this weeks in a few days, I think. Ferrall's a gambling freak and I'm sure he'll mention it and prolly have some gambling experts on his show.

When/if I find anything, I'll isolate it and PM you (or post it here, if any are interested).

Cheers...

I don't listen much to left-wing/Democrat radio shows, but has any of them focused on this subject? They could easily mine the Abramoff/Indian casino tie-in to all of this (Internet gambling probably has had some impact on Indian casino gambling, but I don't know if that's true or not).

I was listening to a recording of 10/3/06 Stern Show and apparently I missed cutting one of the live commercials for GoldenPalace.net. So when does this go in effect?

At the end of Miserable Men on Monday, one of the callers was griping because he was going to have to drive to make bets versus doing it online anymore.

Newsguy, found some info for you. Not a gambler myself, but it seems that there may now be adequate ammo to fight this bill's passing. Las Vegas is joining their former foes the internet gaming sites, to fight the bill (the online poker sites bring big bucks to Vegas with the televised poker tourneys).

A thorough discussion at SFn:

Bubba talked about this bill during the 4th(?) hour of his show Monday.

I keep hearing the gambling sites advertising on Sirius - business as usual. Funny that I haven't heard or seen one ad pro or against the ban on SatRad or TV... You'd think that there'd be more ads.

Try this for that SFN thread...

There's a lot of info in that thread. Good job, pfa...
