Artie Lange's Beer League - Oh My.

First off let me just say I don't listen to Howard Stern although I know who Artie is, but the theatre was filled with folks who know him from Howard Stern, and it showed.

So Beer League, a movie we can all relate to. This film is about a bunch of guys who play Softball, drink and just have a good time. It also marks the return of Ralph Macchio, yes you heard me correctly Ralph Macchio. If you like films like Meatballs, Office Space or Old School, you will love this movie.

Basically we meet Artie an out of work, chain smoking, softball player who still lives at home with his mom. He lives for his softball team and his beer. The team is a little pathetic in a league were some of the teams take softball very seriously, these guys are just out to play. One day while playing their rivals the two teams break out in a brawl, typical of men's slow pitch softball. The cops tell them that this will be the last year both teams will play in this league. Who ever wins the championship stays the loser is gone. Faced with this the guys begin to actually practice, and take the game seriously. As a result they actually begin to win games. In the meantime Artie has struck up a relationship with a girl he used to just hook up with when she was drunk. His mother played by Laurie Metcalf constantly pops up in the most awkward of situations. Artie even gets a job mowing lawns so it would appear that Artie's life is finally turning around. That is of course until a couple of things happen. One, he finds out his girl used to sleep with his arch enemy Mangenelli played very well by Anthony DeSando. Two, the team's manager and pitcher played by the hilarious Seymour Cassel takes a turn for the worst. I don't want to spoil it for ya.

The guys then need to pull themselves together and win the final game. Look this isn't the Constant Gardner, there is very little thinking going on with this film. What is though is funny, hold your sides funny. Everyone does a great job in the film, and if you are out to just have a good time, then this is the film to see.

Point of fact--the numbers right now are only estimates. They are tallied from the theatres reporting their earnings to the distributors and then the distributor reports the figures to the press (and yes, they have been known to fudge the numbers). If you see the film tonight it will be included in this weekends tally, but it won't make the final figure much different then it is now.

Beer League got one thumb up on Ebert & Roeper.
Which isn't bad considering only one person on the show reviewed it.

As you may know, Ebert has been out the last couple months. Kevin Smith, the director, was the guest host of the show with Roeper. Smith didn't have a chance to see two of the movies reviewed on the show, one of them being Beer League.

So, Roeper gave it a thumbs up. He didn't say it was the best or most intelligent movie, but it made him laugh. Looks like Artie's plugging of Roeper's book paid off.

I am curious what Ebert would have given it if he was around.
